ABSTRACT

MANAGEMENT OF UTERINE FIBROID THROUGH AYURVEDA – A CASE STUDY

Uterine fibroid (leiomyomas, fibromyomas or simply myomas) are generally benign uterine neoplasms, commonly encountered in gynaecological practice (5 20% of women in the reproductiv e age group). They are slow growing tumours and take 3 5 years to be clinically palpable, unlike ovarian tumours.
The fibroids are located in uterine and extra uterine are
A) Uterine = i) intramural / interstitial grow within interstitial wall 75%
ii) Sub mucous grow towards peritoneal surface 5%
iii) Sub serous grow towards the uterine cavity 15%
B) Extra uterine most common in cervical fibroid.Leiomyomas, are benign smooth muscle neoplasms that typically originate from the myometrium, due to fib rous consistency and are also called as fibroid. it was critically reviewed in the context of Granthi Roga (disease) and treatment protocol befitting the Samprapti Vighatana of Granthi (encapsulated growth) was subjected in patients of uterine fibroids. Ac cording to ayurvedic texts granthi is of different type Acharya Charaka told 6, Acharya Sushruta told 5 and Acharya Vagbhata told 9 . Treatment plan included both shodhana (purification) and shamana (mitigation) therapies.
