Sneha Kalpana, a significant branch of Bhaishajya Kalpana (Ayurvedic pharmaceutics), focuses on the preparation of lipid-based formulations, primarily medicated oils (Taila) and ghees (Ghrita). These formulations are designed to extract and deliver the therapeutic properties of herbs effectively, utilizing the lipid-soluble active principles. The process involves the combination of three key components: Sneha Dravya (oil or ghee), Kalka Dravya (herbal paste), and Drava Dravya (liquid mediums such as decoctions, juices, or milk). Through controlled heating, the herbal properties are infused into the lipid base. The unique characteristics of Sneha Kalpana include its deep tissue penetration, nourishing effects, and ability to balance all three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). Sneha Siddhi Lakshana refers to the criteria for determining the proper preparation of medicated oils (Taila) and ghee (Ghrita) in Ayurveda. These characteristics ensure that the herbal ingredients have been properly infused into the lipid medium and that the formulation is safe, stable, and therapeutically effective. From a scientific perspective, these signs can be understood based on modern principles of chemistry, pharmacology, and quality control.
