ABSTRACT

ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP: STRATEGIES, CHALLENGES, AND ROLE OF CLINICAL PHARMACISTS

Dr. M. Anusha*, R. Bhargav, Peram Navya, A. Alekhya, M. Nikhitha

Antimicrobial resistance is a serious worldwide health concern caused by the overuse of antimicrobial agents. Antibiotic Stewardship Programs (ASPs) seek to improve antibiotic therapy, patient outcomes, and resistance development. This study examines key antimicrobial stewardship principles and techniques, as well as clinical pharmacists' contributions to their implementation. It emphasizes measures such as audit and feedback, formulary restriction, dose optimization, de-escalation therapy, and guideline-based prescribing. Artificial intelligence and quick diagnostic methods are among the advances discussed. Successful antimicrobial stewardship requires teamwork among healthcare providers and can result in reduced inappropriate antibiotic usage, cheaper healthcare costs; shorter hospital stays, and decreased resistance. Clinical pharmacists play an important role in promoting rational antibiotic use and improving patient care by implementing evidence-based procedures.
