Lyme borreliosis, also known as Lyme disease, is an infection caused by spirochetes from the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species complex, which are transmitted through tick bites. The primary clinical symptom is erythema migrans, a characteristic circular rash that typically resolves on its own without the need for antibiotics. However, if left untreated, the bacteria can disseminate to other parts of the body, leading to more serious complications that may affect the skin, nervous system, joints, or heart. Between May and September, when ticks are in their nymphal stage and most active in spreading the infection, Lyme disease is most frequently contracted..
