SUSTAINABLE ZINC AIR BATTERY- CHALLENGES, FINDINGS, FUTURE SCOPE FOR ANODE MATERIAL

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABS) are energy storage devices after lithium-ion battery technologies in various consumer gadgets and electric automobiles. In addition to being affordable, environmentally friendly and possessing high energy density, ZABS based on alkaline are also highly efficient. Due to parasitic reactions occurring at the Zn anode accompanied by slow oxygen redox kinetics, their development has been hindered. The number of practical applications of batteries is limited by the poor morphology of Zn deposits, which severely limits their life cycle. Significant efforts have been made to overcome anodic challenges and stabilize Zn anodes by modifying cell architecture, operation and material-based approaches. Herein, it is attempted to outline the Zn electrode fundamentals, its challenges and potential solutions in electrically rechargeable ZAB configurations for the development of an efficient energy storage device.
